The History of Colors To Go
Colors to Go paint store was formerly known as Gimpleman’s of Perth Amboy. Originally owned and operated by the Gimpleman brothers Keaval and Nathan. When Keaval became ill, Nathan became sole proprietor. Ralph Curry, Susan Kress’s father, began working with Nathan Gimpleman in 1943 and became partner in 1964. In 1972 thru 1987 Leonard and Susan Kress became business partners with Ralph Curry. In 1987 Len and Sue took full ownership and continued their business in Perth Amboy. At that time the Gimpleman’s Paint store became known as Colors to Go.
In 1977, Susan Kress’s brother Ed opened another Colors to Go location here in Freehold. The initial location was on Route 537 in the Dusal’s/Chipotle shopping center. In 1987 Colors to Go moved to its current location at 620 Park Avenue. The buildings prior tenant was Colonial Freeze, an ice cream and fried seafood restaurant.
In 1995 Len and Sue Kress closed their Perth Amboy location and bought the Freehold location from Sue’s brother Ed. The store has continued to be run by family throughout the years. Len and Sue’s sons Bob & Rich stepped into the business and ran different areas of the business over the years. Sue along with her son Bob and his wife Ann Marie currently maintain the business.
Sadly in November 2014, Leonard Kress passed away suddenly. Len was always out at the counter to say hello to the customers and chat with the contractors. Len would come in daily to check up on things and take care of what needed to be done. In the later years once he knew his business was in good hands with his sons, he would sneak away for some golf or just enjoy planting flowers and taking care of his home. He is truly missed by all.
There are not many businesses that can say they have been established for over 50 years. Colors to Go continues to offer personalized service with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
